Alaska Highway. Company H&S. Medical Corps
Born: 30 January 1910, Georgia. Died: 16 March 1971, Greenville, SC. Enlisted and discharge dates unknown.
He graduated from Furman and Emory Universities and practiced as a general family physician for two years before entering the Army. In March 1942, he was a Captain and stationed at Eglin Field.
Captain Whitworth was in the H&S Company of the segregated 97th Engineer Regiment. They landed at Valdez, Alaska on 29 April 1942. Three feet of snow covered the ground. The 97th Engineers built the northern section of the Alaska Highway.
Capt. Whitworth was in the H&S Company from April 1942 to July 1943. In June of 1943 he was designated as the Regimental Medical Detachment Officer.
His father was Horace M. Whitworth, Sr, a proprietor of the Whitworth Drug Store in Greenville, SC. (1880-1944). His mother was Bessie W. Walters (1883-1966). Capt. Whitworth married Clara Ruth West, a graduate of Lander College.
