Education: Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Electrical Engineering. Civilian Occupation: He worked for Westinghouse Electric Company as an engineer until 1942. He was with the Army Corps of Engineers during WW2. Following the war, he entered law school at the University of Virginia receiving his degree in 1948. He was a judge with the Fairfax County Circuit Court.
His father was William James Vandyck (1883-1944), a clerk for the railroad. His mother was Eva Marie Brinson (1891-1947). He married Ann Harmon Roberts on 3 November 1956 in Alexandria, Virginia.
