Education: University of Illinois, engineer. His father was Clyde E. Stokes, auto parts salesman, and his mother was Jessie L. Stokes. He married Ethel Dreher on 17 July 1944, Cook, Illinois and he married his second wife, Rooney Daugherty, in June 1971 in N. Plainfield, Somerset, New Jersey.
Herbert Stokes worked at Johns-Manville Headquarters as a supervisor of construction production and engineering divisions. In 1954, he commanded an Army Reserve Engineering Construction Battalion.
