In 1930 census he was an apprentice as a railroad machinist. He retired from military service and as a civilian he retired from Martin Marietta Aerospace. He moved to Orland, FL from Fort Ord, California in 1957.
The 97th segregated Engineer Regiment arrived at Valdez, Alaska on 29 April 1942. Three feet of snow covered the ground. Their job was to build the northern section of the Alaska Highway. The Alaska Highway had been opened since November 20, 1942 and the regiment maintained the road to Fairbanks. Eldon C. Stewart, then a 2nd Lt. assigned to the 97th engineers, joined the regiment in April 1943. He was assigned to Company D.
His father was John Fletcher Stewart (1871-1911), a black smith. His mother was Hattie Neely Crawford Stewart (1874-1953). He married Genie Gray Montgomery (1919-2000) on 22 December 1941 in Perry County, Missouri.
