He married Jeanne L. Anderson, from Seattle, WA on 20 January 1946 at the Chapel on the Hill, Ft. Lawton, WA. His mother, Jean Makin, (1884-1969), was a public school teacher and a school nurse. His father was Harold William Walter Schnurstein born in 1886. He was a machinist.
Leslie had two years of college at Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburg, PA. On 20 June 1942 he was relieved of duty as Assistant S-4 and arrived at Chilkoot Barracks, Haines, AK on 3 January 1943 until 16 February 1943. He was in the Aleutians with the 93rd Engineers from 17 February 1943 until 24 May 1944.
