He attended Montgomery High School and received a BS degree in metallurgy in 1939 at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
His father was John C. Powers, a coal miner and track layer, and his mother was Dora Ree Warden (1892-1983). His parents lived in Kingston, West Virginia.
He married Alida Marie Lundren (1919-2016) on 23 June 1943 in Alexandria, LA. She graduated from Montana State Normal College and taught two years in Dutton. She later was employed in the engineering department of Boeing aircraft in Seattle.
