His father, Richard Franklin Pollock, was born in 1856 and died 1942. His mother, Nancy Ellen Pollock, was born in 1864 and died in 1943. His wife, Ida Belle Porter, was born in 1915 and died in 1971.
He graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. His college yearbook describes him as “clear-cut, thoughtful, of retiring nature. William is one of those rare individuals who believe in action rather than words.”
Enlisted on 23 March 1942 at Ft. Belvoir, VA and released 9 January 1946 at Fort Dix, N.J. Promoted from Captain to Major on 20 April 1943 and from Major to Lt. Colonel on 15 February 1944.
1st Lt. Timberlake, Regimental Motor Pool, wrote a letter home about the 50 hour project to help Pollock’s company to pull a bulldozer sinking in mud/muskeg. On Timberlake’s map, one spot was labeled Pollock’s Graveyard located in the Devil’s Swamp area. Most likely that is where the bulldozer is buried.
He was the 2nd Battalion Commander at Chilkoot Barracks, Haines, AK from 3 Jan 1943 to 17 Feb 1943 and the First Battalion Commander from 18 Feb 1943 to his departure from Chilkoot Barracks on 18 Feb 1943. He arrived at Ft. Randall, Cold Bay, AK on 27 Feb 1943.
