
Alaska Highway. Company E & Company H&S as S-4 Assistant Supply Officer. Born: 11 March 1918, Newbury Port, MA. Died: 16 October 2009, Mystic, CT. Married: Jane Clark Woodward on July 15,1944 (26 Mar 1921 – 19 Jan 2007).
He graduated at Wakefield Massachusetts High School in 1939 and with free tuition he graduated in 1939 from MIT with a degree in Business and Engineering Administration.
He arrived to the Alaska Highway project in April 1942 and was assigned to Company E under command of 1st Lt. Homer M. Pierce.
In September, 1942, he was promoted to 1st Lt., transferred to the H&S Company and was assigned as the Assistant Supply Officer under command of Capt. George Egge, Regimental Supply Officer. During their many moves, at one time he was a tent mate with 1st Lt. Timberlake. He was known to all as “Chuck”, the best poker player in the regiment.
After the Highway was completed he wintered with the regiment at Chilkoot Barracks in Haines, AK from 3 January 1943 to 17 February 1943. On 18 February 1943 he departed with the 93rd from Haines and arrived at Ft. Randal at Cold Bay, AK on 27 February 1943. Ft. Randall was part of the Aleutian chain of Islands.
He was the Project Supply Officer for the Resident Engineer at Ft. Randall in addition to his duty as Regimental S-4 from 27 December 1943 to the date of the departure of the unit from Randall. He was promoted from 1st Lt. to Capt. on 4 February 1944.
His civilian business career included 24 years sales and marketing at American Bosch in Springfield, MA; 3 years as a marketing consultant; 3 years sales and marketing at Perkins machine and Gear, West Springfield, MA; and 5 years with Manning Company, Greenfield, MA.
He returned to the Highway in 1980 with his son Ted revisiting many sites and showing his photos to the locals. He has two sons, Steve and Ted, and two daughters, Lynn and Elizabeth, and eleven grandchildren. After he retired, he was a proud member for ten years with the ROMEO’s (Retired old men eating out).
