The 97th Engineers landed in Valdez, Alaska on 29 April 1942. Two to three feet of snow covered the ground. The 97th built the northern section of the Alaska Highway. Lt. Murphey arrived to the Highway in January 1943 and was assigned to Company F. A month later he was assigned to Company A and remained with them until July 1943.
His father was William Murphey, a machinist, and his mother was Winefred T. Murphey. His wife was Sara E. Inee Mallon.
