Alaska Highway. First Battalion Commander. Veteran WW1 and WW2. Born: 4 July 1896, Cherokee, Iowa. Died: 16 January 1946, El Paso, TX. At age 50, he died from pneumonia and multiple pulmonary emboli.
In 1940 Major Ronald J. Munro was sent to active duty. He received orders to report to Ft. McIntosh. He had been stationed at Marfa Engineering Corps, Presidio County surveyor. In 1941 Major Munro was the new commanding officer of a Fort Bliss engineering squadron.
Enlisted: 1 January 1941 and discharged 29 October 1944. He was a Major in the segregated 95th Engineer (GS) Regiment stationed in British Columbia and Yukon, Canada. They built the southern sector of the Alaska Highway. After four years active duty with the US Army Corps of Engineers, at age 48, he was retired from active duty. He died two years later.
Education: University of Iowa graduate Civil Engineer.
Civilian Occupation: He was a professor of civil engineering at the University of New Mexico and later served with the Department of Agriculture as an engineer on soil conservation projects.
His father was Bill Munro and he married Eva M. (Munro).
