Alaska Highway. Captain, Company A and H&S.
Born: 4 July 1914, Stevens, Skamania County, WA. Died: 30 May 2003, Whitman County, WA. Buried: Bethel Cemetery, Steptoe, Whitman County, WA.
Enlisted: 1 May 1941 and Discharged: 11 August 1948.
Education: He graduated from Steptoe High School in 1932 and received an engineering degree at State College of Washington. He was a 2LT in the ROTC at State College of Washington.
He was Commander of Company A of the segregated 97th Engineer Regiment. He and the 97th landed in Valdez, Alaska on 29 April 1942. Three feet of snow covered the ground. The 97th built the northern section of the Alaska Highway. Captain McMeekin was Company A’s commander from April 1942 until January 1943. In February 1943 he was assigned to H&S Company as the First Battalion Commander. In July 1943 he was promoted to Major.
His father was Edward Andre McMeekin (1874-1958) and his mother was Lulu Mae Jennings McMeekin (1880-1956). Spouse: First wife-Esther (1913-1963). Second wife- Ruth Jacob “McGee” McCune McMeekin (1916-1990). Third wife-Gloria Magers.
