Born: 26 January 1908, Morgantown, West VA. Died: 12 December 1995, Salisbury, Rowan, NC. Buried: Aurora Cemetery, Aurora, Preston County, West Virginia. Veteran of WW2 and Korea.
Enlisted: 1941 and discharged 8 December 1945. Registered for draft on 10 January 1946. Re-enlisted: 15 October 1948 and discharged 30 November 1962.
In April of 1942, he was a Captain in the Corps of Engineers assigned to the 93rd Engineer Regiment. This engineering unit built the middle section of the Alaska Highway, over 240 miles. After the Highway was completed, they moved to Chilkoot Barracks in Haines, Alaska from 3 January 1943 to 18 February 1943. All enlisted and officers slept on mattresses with a roof over their heads. Their next assignment was the Aleutians.
In 1966 and 1972 Military Registers, McGinnis is listed retired from Army reserves on 12 January 1962 with a rank of Lt. Colonel.
He attended the University of West Virginia and completed a degree in engineering. His father was Benjamine McGinnis (1883-1969) who is listed in the 1910 census as a Lawyer and in the 1920 census a cashier in a bank. He was born in West Virginia. His mother was Xa Laprice McGinnis, born in West Virginia (1889-1947).
He married Marion Francis Stemple (1934-1974). At one time during the construction of the Highway, he was a tent mate with Capt. Cassino and Lt’s Timberlake and L.H. Schnurstein.
