Enlisted: 5 March 1942 and discharged 24 March 1946. In 1940 he was in his third year of college for a degree in engineering.
In April 1942 he and the 97th Engineer Regiment docked at Valdez, Alaska. Three feet of snow covered the ground. Captain Mason was the Motor Officer of Company A from April 1942 to July of 1943. The 97th Engineer Regiment built the northern section of the Alaska Highway.
His father was Walter H. Mason, a building contractor, (1884-1931) and his mother was Bessie May Burnett (1890-1958). He married Janet Virginia Grim on 9 March 1940 at Natural Bridge, VA. They had a son, Charles Walter Mason, a professional photographer and professor at University of Alaska in Fairbanks.
He had two sisters, Viola Mason Beard (1910-1994) and Margaret Mason Watts (1912-2006) and his brother was Woodrow Stevenson Mason (1917-1976).
