Education: Virginia Polytechnic Institute. His father was Samuel Wesley Land, RFD mail carrier, tobacco farmer (1872-1951). His mother was Mary Beatrice Buchanan (1887-1974). He married Eunice Gray Caroon on 6 July 1941 in Kinston, Lenoir, NC.
Civilian occupation: In 1939 he was an assistant county agent for 4-H clubs. In 1940 his draft card listed his occupation with Virginia Agricultural Extension Service. After the war in 1947, he was a tobacco specialist and in 1948 became a supervisor for the tobacco section of the Virginia Department of Agriculture. He was born and raised on a tobacco farm.
