African American. Alaska Highway. Company F. Born: 22 December 1913, Bennard, MS. Died: 14 March 1994, Rochester, IN. His family was the only black family in Rochester for many years.
Enlisted: 29 March 1941, Camp Shelby, MS. Education: grammar school, completed the 9th grade.
Civilian occupation: farm laborer and he also worked in maintenance department at a clothing store, Hart, Schaffner and Marx. He retired from Hart Schaffner and Marx in 1984. He was also a self-employed brick mason. He did landscaping for a nursing home. His son, Glen, said that he worked 16 hours a day.
He married Melrose Brown on 23 March 1946 in Tunica, MS. His father was Issac Jordan and his mother was Lucinda Bell. He had 16 brothers and sisters. He had a habit of leaving the family farm for several days. His uncle tells a story about a time he left and two weeks later he received a letter from Clarence from Alaska.
According to his obituary, he was a semi-pro baseball player for the U.S. Army during WWII. He later became an umpire for Little League and Senior League softball. He had eight children and their favorite memory was playing baseball or catch with their father.
