He married Virginia Mae Wilson (1922-1996) on 4 May 1942 at Ft. Lawton Post Chapel, Seattle Washington before he reported to duty in the Yukon. Lt. Clyde S. Deal, of the 93rd Engineers, witnessed the marriage.
In 1930 and 1940 census, Herman L. Hostetter, George’s father, worked as an Assistant Treasurer for a Contracting business. His mother’s name was Grace M. Shand Hostetter (1896-1986). Also reported in the 1940 census, George worked as a stat Engineer for an Auto Factory.
After the Highway mission was completed, George arrived at Chilkoot Barracks, AK from regular leave in the United States on 5 January 1943. He was Company C Platoon Commander from 5 Jan 1943 to June 1944. He departed from Chilkoot Barracks on 18 Feb 1943 and arrived at Ft. Randall, (Cold Bay), AK on 27 February 1943. Additional duty as Regimental Fire Marshal at Ft. Randall from 15 Dec 1943 to June 1944. Relieved from assignment with the 93rd Engineers and assigned to Headquarters Alaska Department (Engineer Construction Division) at Anchorage, AK. Promoted from 2nd Lt. to 1st Lt. on 18 Sept 1943.
