
Alaska Highway, African American, Company D. Born: 19 May 1917, Greenville, Mississippi. Died: 1 November 2003, Baltimore, MD. Enlisted (1) 18 April 1941 and released 25 July 1945. Enlisted (2) 28 June 1946 and released 31 August 1962.
Education: four years high school. He was married to Jewel B. Harris of Greenville, MS on 2 Sept 1944 in Pierce, WA. His second wife was Marilyn Kate Nelson whom he married 25 February 1950 at Williamson, TX. His father, a farmer, was Matt Harris and his mother, a laborer on the farm, was Cornellia Mason Harris.
The Delta Democrat-Times of Greenville, MS published an article on 12 June 1942. William wrote a letter to Charles P. Williams, manager of the Greenville Compress, where William was formerly employed stating he wants his job back after he comes home. He also said that he was with the 93rd Engineers.
He Graduated from Greenville H.S. and was just recently promoted to 1st Sgt. Lt. Donald Schmitt stated that Sgt. Harris was key to his success in commanding Company D.
