Alaska Highway. Exec Officer of 97th Engineer Regiment. Veteran WW1, WW2 and Korea.
Born: 26 June 1900, Troy, NY. Died: 25 September1984, Riverside, California.
He enlisted in WW1 on 1 October 1918 and was honorably discharged on 14 December 1918. WW2 enlistment was 3 May 1941 and discharged 2 January 1948. Re-enlisted for Korean conflict on 18 September 1951 and released on 31 July 1960.
He studied engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York and he was a member with the Student Army Training Corps at Rensselaer. He graduated with a Civil Engineering degree.
Major Gordon was with H&S Company as the Executive Officer with the segregated U.S. Army General Service 97th Engineer Regiment. They landed at Valdez, Alaska on 29 April 1942. Three feet of snow covered the ground. The 97th built the northern section of the Alaska Highway.
Major Gordon was with H&S Company from April 1942 to January 1943. In December 1942 he was promoted to Lt. Colonel. Find- a- grave headstone indicates that he had transferred from the Army to the Air Force with highest rank of Colonel.
His father was Abraham Gordon (1872-1972) and his mother was Eva Leah Cantor Gordon (1875–1961). He married Gertrude Lasker (1906-1984) on 21 June 1924 in Kings County, NY.
