He was an officer with the segregated 97th Engineer Regiment. He with the 97th landed at Valdez, Alaska on 29 April 1942. Three feet of snow was on the ground. The 97th built the northern section of the Alaska Highway.

Education: University of Oklahoma, ROTC, Engineer. His father was Clarence D. Gamel (1896-1935) and his mother was Crystal Irene Fikes (1902-1987). Alfred married Mary Bess Pickard on 2 July 1941 at Shawnee, Pottawatomie, OK. She also attended the University of Oklahoma and was on the swim team.
