African American, Alaska Highway, 97th Regiment Medical Detachment.
Born: 2 March 1916, Eaton, Putnam County, GA. Died: 8 August 1995, Los Angeles, CA. Enlisted: 18 March 1941, Ft. Benning, GA and discharged 27 September 1945.
Education: grammar school. Civilian occupation: mechanic, repair man and in 1940 census he was listed as a truck driver for a lumber company.
He was a medical corpsman attached to the segregated 97th Engineer Regiment. They landed at Valdez, Alaska on April 1942. Snow covered the ground and the surrounding mountains. The temperature was in the low 20’s.
The 97th Engineers built the northern section of the Alaska Highway. They stayed in Alaska until September 1943; returned to Camp Sutton, NC and in April 1944 shipped out to Milne Bay, New Guinea, Philippines.
His father was Grady W. Floyd and his mother was Annie L Walker, a servant for a private home.
