Alaska Highway. Company E, 2BN Hqt. Veteran of WW2 and Korean War.
Born: 27 June 1910, Maryland. Died: 20 July 1989, MD. Enlisted: 3 March 1941 Air Corps. Retired: 1 June 1961.
He graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1933 with a BS degree in mechanical engineering. He was with ROTC and upon graduation was commissioned a second lieutenant in the US. Army Corps of Engineers.
On April 29, Captain Fischer, Company E Commander with the 97th Engineers, docked at Valdez, Alaska. The 97th built the northern section of the Alaska Highway.
Captain Fischer was Company E commander for 3 months and his next assignment was the second battalion headquarters from July 1942 to October 1942. He final assignment with the 97th was to regimental headquarters from October 1942 until he was transferred to Ft. Lewis, Washington in February 1943.
He retired in 1961 after 28 years of service as an engineer. He was a veteran of WW2, the Korean conflict and as a Colonel in the Air Force he worked with the Rome Air Material Area at Griffis Air Force Base.
His father was John H. Fischer and his mother was Elizabeth Hahn Fischer. He had a brother, Earl Henry Fischer, who was an Industrial Engineer for Fairchild Aircraft Division.
