The 97th Engineers arrived in Valdez, Alaska on 29 April 1942. Two to three feet of snow covered the ground. They built the northern section of the Alaska Highway. Lt. Erickson arrived to the Alaska Highway in January 1943 and was assigned to Company E. In May of 1943 his assignment was changed to Headquarters and in July of 1943 he was promoted to 1st Lt.
His father was Fritz John Erickson, born in Sweden and a celery farmer. His mother was Winifred E. Erickson, born in Nebraska. His wife was Grace Muriel Erickson (1925-2012). He and Grace had two daughters, Glenda and Gail, and a son, Gordon.
