
Alaska Highway, H&S Company Born: 17 June 1910, Montgomery, Alabama. Died: 28 December 1981, Gulfport, Mississippi.
Enlisted 14 July 1940 and released on 31 July 1960.
He graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute [Auburn] and was in the ROTC.
He was the 93 Engineer Regimental Supply Officer and his crew were Lt. Frank Perrin, Lt. Donald Schmitt and Master Sgt G. Williams (Names on sign at Morley Bay).
His wife was Mildred Shirley Farrell. His son , George V. Egge, Jr., lives in Arlington, Virginia. He stated that his father was in Pineville, Louisiana at Camp Beauregard and he was involved in the Louisiana/Texas Maneuvers. He was 4 years old when his father went to Alaska. His father came home in December, bearing gifts of mukluks and a bear skin and told his son how cold it was.
His next assignment was at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. He spent three months training at Ft. Belvoir building air strips. His service included time at McDill Air Field in Florida, Air Fields in New Guinea in 1944 and finally an important Air Field in Okinawa in 1945.
His father was assigned with the African American 1873rd Engineer Aviation Battalion on the Islands of Le Shim and Okinawa (Ryukyu Islands). They constructed the air strip on le Shima for the Japanese Peace Delegation. The peace delegation flew newly painted white airplanes with green crosses and landed on that air strip. They were met and escorted by US Army and Air Force personnel and flown to Manila, Phillipines to sign a surrender on the USS Missouri.
