Alaska Highway. Company H&S.
Born: 24 January 1941, Cullman County, AL. Died: 8 October 1960, Birmingham, Jefferson County, AL. He died in Reserve Status with the U.S. Army. Enlisted: (1) 30 May 1936 (2) 27 September 1941. Discharged: (1) 30 May 1938. (2) 2 November 1945.
In 1940 census he had completed one year high school and was employed by the Department of Education in Vernon Lamar, AL.
Second Lt. Driver was in H&S Company with the segregated 97th Engineer Regiment. They arrived at Valdez, Alaska on 29 April 1942. Three feet of snow covered the ground. The 97th Engineers built the northern section of the Alaska Highway.
Second Lt. Driver was assigned to H&S Company from April 1942 to July 1943. He was promoted to 1st Lt. in July of 1942. His assignment was the personnel adjutant. He signed all records of payroll and personnel rosters.
After discharge from the Army, he enrolled in the first session of summer school at the University of Alabama and graduated in 1948 with a B.S. degree in Commerce and Business Administration.
In the Army Reserve he was Captain of the Engineer Training Division, 16th group, 3860th unit, ASFTC and obtained the highest rank of Major Corps of Engineers USAR.
His father was Cyrus S. Driver and his mother was Ludie Blackwood. He married Dorothy Dean Osborne (1920-2002).
