TOO MUCH BEAR MEAT? by Martin W. Detert. “We were short of meat in the spring of the year, so a bear was killed for our supply. We made the meat into bear burgers. That night I became really sick and a medic was called to my side. At first he thought I’d eaten too much bear meat, but instead I had acute appendicitis. The road was almost impassable, but the army ambulance did manage to get me to an outlying airport. I was hoisted on top of a C-47 transport plane and place on top of the mailbags. They flew me to Fairbanks, Alaska for an operation.” Pioneer Road by Donna Blasor-Bernhardt.
