Alaska Highway, Company D, 2nd Battalion. Born: 19 January 1916, Detroit, Michigan Died: 28 December 2001, Seattle, WA. Enlisted: 15 April 1942 and released on 24 January 1946.
He graduated from college with a degree in Geology and his specialty was oil. He married Alvara Forbus Shoemaker in Seattle, Washington in 1946. His father was William John Deal, born in England and his mother was Mary Ann Mackie, born in Scotland.
Interview by Donna Blasor-Bernhardt in her book Pioneer Road, Clyde tells his story. “We worked for about nine months on the Alaska Highway. In November of 1942 we were building what we thought would be our winter camp-log cabins for the entire company at Judith Creek; 50 miles south of Whitehorse, Yukon. After working on the Alaska Highway, the 93rd moved to Chilkoot Barracks, an old Army Post near Skagway.”
The 2nd Battalion stayed at Chilkoot Barracks, Haines, AK from 3 Jan 1943 to 18 Feb 1943 then were transferred to Ft. Glenn, Umnak, Alaska (Aleutians) near Dutch Harbor. He was shipped home to Ft. Lewis in 1944 and the following year shipped out again to the India Burma Theater. He said, “By this time I had gained rank and was Company D Commander.”
