Alaska Highway. Officer, Medical Corps. Born: 19 September 1907 Chatfield, Fillmore, MN. Died: 15 July 1983 Mesa, Maricopa, AZ. Enlisted: 16 October 1942 and discharged 8 March 1946.
Education: McCalester College, MN medical school, five years. Civilian occupation: physician and surgeon. In 1940 he was practicing with Dr. Hugh Beals. For 13 years, he was the medical director at the State Hospital in Moose Lake, MN and also served as the chairman of the commission of American Academy of General Practice. He retired from medical practice after 40 years and moved to Mesa, AZ in 1976.
The 97th segregated engineer regiment arrived at Valdez, AK on 29 April 1942. Three feet of snow covered the ground. Their job was to build the northern sector of the Alaska Highway. Dr. Charles C. Cooper arrived to the project in December of 1942. He served with the 97th engineers in the H&S Company.
His father Charles M. Cooper was a physician in Chatfield, MN. His mother was Katherine Cole. His spouse was Edith Horner Cooper and they had one child, Kittie Cole Cooper.
