Alaska Highway. Civil Engineer, First Battalion HQ and H&S Company. Born: 7 September 1908, Nalicio Italy. Died: 19 May 1986, Carbon, Utah. Enlisted 15 December 1940 and released 28 January 1946.
He graduated from Colorado School of Mines with degree in Engineering of Mines and had experience in Western coal fields. James was a member of The Society for Testing Materials.
His spouse was Wanda Clinite Cassano (1907-1974). His father was Eugenio Cassano and his mother was Michalino Cassano. Both immigrated from Italy in 1921.
Lt. Squires when interviewed stated that Johnny Johns, a native guide from Carcross, and Capt Cassano mapped early surveys and conducted reconnaissance for a route from Carcross over the supply road [Tagish Road] toward Teslin. Squires also said that Casino was a good officer.
He arrived at Ft. Randall, Cold Bay, Aleutians 25 March 1943 from Detached Service at Engineer Field Officers School, Ft. Belvoir, VA.
Military Register: Randall Utilities Officer for resident engineer from 27 March 1943 to 12 July 1943. Released from assignment with 93rd and assigned to Engineer Unit Training Center, Camp Claiborne, LA. Departed to Louisiana 13 July 1943. On 1 January 1943 DS to Field Officers School, Ft. Belvoir, VA. As a Lt. Colonel with the Corps of Engineers in Europe, his responsibility involved the rehabilitation of European Coal Mines.
