His father Robert Franklin II (1892-1919). He was a soldier in WW1 and while in France died in an auto accident. His mother was Maud Amanda Merrill (1886-1918).
Robert was orphaned at the age of four and was raised by A.W. Palmer family and his grandfather, Dr. Merrill. He graduated from Haverford School for Boys in 1933 and in 1937 graduated from Haverford College, PA with degree in Civil Engineering. From 1937 to 1940, he worked as a junior engineer and a surveyor/engineer.
He married Virginia Dettore Brattan, a nurse, in 1949. She was born in 1924 and passed in 2013. They had five children and twelve grandchildren. He worked as a construction engineer for Stone, Webster and Barnes Engineering and retired as a civil engineer from Massachusetts Department of Public Works.
