Alaska Highway, Company C Commander, 95th Engineer Regiment and served in 1312th General Service Engineer Regiment, New Guinea and Luzon, SW Pacific Theater.
Born: 21 June 1912, Norfolk, Virginia. Died: 9 February 1975, Machiasport, Washington County, Maine. He enlisted in 1941 and re-up’d on 23 July 1947 Regular Army, Corps of Engineers. He retired 30 April 1964. Highest rank obtained Lt. Colonel on 5 November 1954.
Education: Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Electrical Engineer and ROTC 2nd Lt., graduated 31 May 1933. From 1934-1935, he attended the Westinghouse Technical School at East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
His father was Charles Edwin Belote (1889-1958) and his mother was Madge M. Belote. He married Georgia Moon Belote (1904-2002).
Prior to active duty and going to war Byron Belote worked two years as an electrical engineer for the Virginia Electric and Power Company and later was employed for eight years at Westinghouse Electric Company.
Captain Byron Belote, Company C Commander, arrived with the segregated 95th Engineer Regiment in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, Canada in May 1942. The 95th, assigned to the Alaska Highway Project, began constructing road, bridges and culverts in the southern sector of the Highway.
In 1949, Major Belote, instructor for the Army Organized Reserve Corps Office in Staunton, Virginia, was assigned a new job as operations and training officer for the Virginia Military District, Richmond, VA. In 1950 he received an assignment in the Army European Command. He was the post engineer at Bremerhaven, Germany.
In 1954, his new assignment was executive officer for the Nashville District. Newly promoted to Lt. Colonel, Belote was transferred to Boston with same duties as in Nashville, but for the New England District.
He was responsible for military and civil works construction and engineer procurement functions. In 1957, Lt. Colonel Belote, assistant division engineer for Military construction in the New England District, was involved in preliminary plans for construction of a missile maintenance shop in Milford, Connecticut.
