Alaska Highway. Company A. Born: 3 October 1917, Knoxville, TN. Died: 8 August 2005, Knoxville, TN. Enlisted: 28 February 1942 and discharged November 15, 1945.
Education: In 1940 census, he was in his first year at University of TN. His father was Donald Robert Bailey (1881-1959) who worked with Southern Railroad as a coach carpenter and upholester. His mother was Flora Bell Blackburn (1884-1956).
He married Josephine “Jody” Timmons in March 1943 during a furlough from British Columbia, Canada and the US Army. He was an engineer in General Service with the 95th Regiment and worked on the Alaska Highway. He contracted an illness in the “frozen north” and spent nine months in a hospital.
His next assignment was 16 months in the South Pacific-New Guinea, Luzon and Leyte. He commanded Company B of the 1312th Engineers. After discharged from the Army, he returned to the University of Tennessee to complete his degree.
